Off-the-shelf wheelchairs are available in set sizes and configurations, and suit people who need the use of a wheelchair on occasion, for example to access medical appointments, but do not use a wheelchair for the majority of the time. Because these types of wheelchairs have limited configuration options, they are much more cost effective than customised wheelchairs.
