Led by industry respected clinicians with over 40 years combined experience, join Kate Pain (GTK), Joana Santiago (Medifab) and the GTK Team as they share their experiences with the assessment and prescription of seating. This is a fantastic opportunity to build up your confidence by learning from educators with years of clinical experience.
This hands-on two day workshop will provide you with the opportunity to:
Day One
- Learn and conduct a thorough MAT evaluation – yoga mats provided
- Understand and apply principles and biomechanics as applied to seating posture
- Translate assessment findings into product parameters
- Develop problem solving skills based on real case scenarios
- Develop clinical justification skills to write a successful application for funding
- Integrate knowledge learnt into product set up and clinical practice.
Day Two
It’s time to get hands on with tools. Lose your fear of Allen keys and learn how to adjust wheelchair seating for optimal positioning for your client. We’ll provide you with your own seating tool set to keep, show you how to use them correctly and how to get the best results for your clients. You will:
- Name wheelchair and seating components and describe the possible adjustments to each
- Demonstrate confident use of tools required to adjust wheelchair and seating components
- Describe clinical reasoning for optimal positioning of wheelchair and seating components
All participants will receive a backpack and tool kit to take home.

Meet the Presenters:
Kate Pain (GTK)
Kate comes from an occupational therapy background, with two decades of experience in varied settings, specialising in wheelchair seating and positioning. She has followed the evolution of wheelchair seating theory and practice, and enjoys bringing the latest research to therapists practicing in the field.
Kate is also an enthusiastic proponent of posture care over the 24 hour time period, through the lifespan, sharing the appreciation that positioning outside of the wheelchair is just as important as postural alignment in mobility devices.
Kate is passionate about sharing her skills and experiences with therapists, to build their confidence in postural assessment and prescription of wheelchairs and seating. Kate enjoys presenting at larger clinical education events and inservices for therapy groups, as well as supporting therapists with complex postural assessments and equipment prescription.
Joana Santiago (Medifab)
Joana Santiago completed her training in Occupational Therapy in Portugal in 2004. She is passionate about Seating and Positioning and understands how comprehensive postural management can have a strong influence on functionality, health, and the ability to lead a positive lifestyle. Over the years, Joana has gained extensive clinical experience throughout her career, working with suppliers of medical equipment as a Seating and Positioning Consultant among large hospitals and rehab centres in Europe and the United Arab Emirates.
In the past 15 years, Joana has worked within the industry in 5 different countries around the world and is now based in Sydney, Australia as a Clinical Educator for Medifab, where she is able to have a positive influence on the development and supply of their extensive range of products. Her passion, pride in her work, and energy, make her one of the most renowned educators in Australasia and beyond. A vibrant personality and absorbing method of teaching allows her to deliver engaging training.
Joana has presented internationally, including at the International Seating Symposium, European Seating Symposium, Oceania Seating Symposium, Asia-Pacific OT Congress, Posture and Mobility Group (PMG) Conference, and Canadian Seating and Mobility Conference and throughout Australia at in-services to seating clinics, ATSA Independent Living Expo, Assistive Technology Conference of Queensland (ATQ), and Australian Assistive Technology Conference (ARATA).
