Manual wheelchairs – From Prescription to Wheelchair Skills

Join us for a manual wheelchair ‘boot-camp’. From scripting attendant propelled wheelchairs right through to tilt-in-space and complex folding and rigid frame wheelchairs, this workshop will ensure you feel confident with all your manual wheelchair prescriptions.

We’ll learn how to prescribe and configure manual wheelchairs to maximise independence, function and long term health with avoidance of overuse injuries. We’ll look at how the seating system interfaces with the wheelchair and how to successfully match your seating to the wheelchair. We will also delve into wheelchair type and frame selection, and how to configure the wheelchair to meet the user’s and their caregivers’ goals.

In the afternoon, we’ll develop our wheelchair skills in a practical session. In small groups, we’ll practice instruction and completion of a variety of wheelchair skills from propulsion to wheelies to transfers and more. We’ll discuss the importance of these skills in everyday life and present strategies for teaching your clients these skills.
