Paediatric Roadshow (Newcastle)

Paediatric Roadshow - Newcastle Event by GTK

The GTK Paediatric Roadshow is pulling into Newcastle.

The roadshow is a great learning opportunity for clinicians new to prescribing paediatric assistive technology (AT) as well as those who have been doing it for a while.

We’re drawing together the experts in the field of paediatric AT prescription for one learning-filled day. See all the new products and learn how they can assist your clients and families to meet their goals.

Join the teams from GTK, Medifab, Ki Mobility, Permobil and Sunrise Medical/Leckey for a series of 90 minute deep dives into a range of topics. You’ll have the opportunity to choose between a range of clinical and product seminars to suit your learning needs, with the choice between two seminars for each session. We’ll have all the newest paediatric equipment from Rifton, Leckey, Medifab, Helping Hand, Jenx, Permobil, TiLite, Ki Mobility and Raz to look at in depth.

Agenda for the day

9am to 10am

Welcome to the Roadshow + Paediatric Overview | Presented by Kate Pain (GTK)

10.15am to 11.45am (Room A)

Strollers and Car Seats: Mainstream versus Specialised  | Presented by Jamie Cockle (Medifab)

The majority of children will have a stroller and a car seat from birth. A huge range of these mainstream products exist to support typically developing children, however, they are not designed with disability and impairment in mind, they do not cater for the needs of children with disabilities and their families. This session will explore the areas of Car seats and Strollers, providing opportunity for hands on solution-based learning considering one key question: When do I need to consider a specialised stroller or car seat? And more importantly, Why?

10.15am to 11.45am (Room B)

Early Intervention and Positioning for Development | Presented by Kate Pain and Ashish Isaac (GTK)

The latest research evidence demonstrates how important it is for children to be engaged in activities in their optimal functional position, in order to assist with postural control and social interactions. Early intervention is also key in developing neurological pathways, which will support children’s ongoing sensory and motor skills.

In this session, we will look at the different early intervention assistive technology equipment options that are available, including activity chairs, early intervention systems and equipment for showering and toileting. We will also discuss how to tailor the equipment to the child’s needs.

LUNCH

12.30pm to 2pm (Room A)

Prescribing Manual Wheelchairs for Paediatric Users | Presented by Andrew Rousham (Ki Mobility/Paragon)

What should we be thinking about when we are prescribing a wheelchair for a child? Is it the same as an adult’s wheelchair, just smaller? Who and what do we need to consider? What set-up and options are going to be important for the user and carers. These are some of the questions we will look at through examining some of the paediatric wheelchairs which are on the market today.

12.30pm to 2pm (Room B)

The Importance of Sleep Positioning with Paediatric Clients | Presented by Kate Pain (GTK)

We spend a lot of time making sure our paediatric clients are provided with the best support in their wheelchairs or seating options, but often forget about the many hours they spend in bed each day.

Come and learn about the many benefits of 24 hour positioning and how it can help a child meet their schooling and leisure goals during their waking hours. At the end of this session, we will understand the importance of supportive positioning towards quality of sleep and how sleep systems can affect function, tone and positioning throughout the day.

2.15pm to 3.45pm (Room A)

Powering Play for Paeds | Presented by Tracee-Lee Maginnity (Permobil)

Mobility at an early stage in life aids in the development of functional activities including play. Critical changes occur during development when a child is able to move in a self-directed way. This session will look at the developmental importance of mobility right through the childhood years (0-12years). We’ll review powered mobility and review how power seat functions can enhance and enable engagement in a range of ADL’s.

2.15pm to 3.45am (Room B)

Paediatric Standing and Walking | Presented by Amy Bjornson (Sunrise Medical)

This course will consider how standing/walking frames can positively influence engagement and foster participation. We’ll consider implications, considerations, dosage and contraindications to standing and walking. We’ll review the postural assessments required, give preparation tips for trial and consider how to implement these devices into client therapy programs.

Clinical objectives include:

  • Consideration of standing and walking as part of 24-hour posture support
  • Use with paediatric clients while considering growth, ease of use and participation
  • The maximisation of health, posture and function for paediatric clients.
