Daniel Smith
Assistive Technology Consultant

With a background in both occupational rehabilitation and assistive technology, Daniel brings a wealth of experience and a deep passion for client-centred care to the GTK Brisbane team. After completing a Bachelor of Health Science and Master of Occupational Therapy, Daniel began his career in a blended Occupational Rehab and NDIS role, gaining valuable insight into the challenges and opportunities within the disability sector. This experience led to a five-year tenure as an Assistive Technology Consultant in Sydney, before making the move north to join GTK.
From the outset of their OT journey, assistive technology was what sparked Daniel’s interest, and it’s still what drives him every day. He’s especially passionate about working with highly active clients, including individuals with spinal cord injuries, and love prescribing outdoor and off-road wheelchairs as well as power assist devices. These kinds of devices, tailored to support an active lifestyle, are where Daniel feels AT can make a huge difference to someone’s life — not just in mobility, but in restoring independence and joy.
One of the most memorable moments in their career came during an off-road powerchair trial with a teenage girl who’d sustained a spinal injury. Helping her access the back paddock to reconnect with her horses for the first time since her accident was a powerful reminder of the emotional and life-changing impact the right assitive technology equipment can have.
Outside of work, Daniel spends time exploring the outdoors with their family in a camper trailer and, whenever possible, heading offshore for a gamefishing trip with mates — though life is currently shared with the busy joy of raising a two-year-old!
