Unpacking the Invisible Variables of Power Wheelchair Prescription (Brisbane)

Unpacking the Invisible Variables of Power Wheelchair Prescription - Brisbane

As power wheelchairs continue to advance, clinicians face an increasing challenge: understanding not only what a chair can do, but how effectively it performs in real-world environments. While two power wheelchairs may offer the same features—such as tilt, elevating leg rests, or anterior reach—the underlying specifications can vary significantly and may have a profound impact on function, access, and participation.

This session explores the often-overlooked variables that influence clinical outcomes and highlights the important relationship between design, engineering, and functional performance. Through case studies, product comparisons featuring the Permobil 3 Series and 5 Series power wheelchairs, and live programming demonstrations, participants will learn how to identify and interpret the specifications that matter most and incorporate them into their clinical reasoning.

We will also examine common—and less commonly discussed—challenges reported by power wheelchair users and demonstrate how targeted programming adjustments can improve function, independence, and participation. Attendees will gain practical insight into the links between functional goals, programming strategies, and user outcomes, enabling them to better overcome barriers experienced in everyday life.

Participants will leave with a clear framework for evaluating power wheelchairs and seating systems based on clinical relevance rather than marketing claims, allowing for more confident assessment, prescription, and justification of complex mobility equipment.

Join us to strengthen your clinical reasoning, refine your recommendations, and uncover the “hidden variables” that can make the difference between an adequate prescription and an exceptional one.
