Rity Au

Assistive Technology Consultant  |  MOccTher

Before joining GTK, Rity worked as a community occupational therapist, providing support to individuals with disabilities for the past several years following her graduation from the Master of Occupational Therapy program at the University of Sydney. Her work was primarily focused on supporting individuals funded through the NDIS or Disability Support for Older Australians (DSOA) Program.

Throughout her experience, Rity found equipment prescription to be one of the most fulfilling aspects of her role as an OT. Joining GTK enables her to stay updated of the latest advancements in assistive technology and to continue to craft custom solutions tailored to her clients’ unique needs. Drawing from her occupational therapy background, Rity is passionate about empowering individuals to live with greater autonomy, self-reliance, and independence.

Rity particularly enjoys working with seating systems and manual/power wheelchairs. In her words, ‘witnessing the joy and smiles on the faces of clients and their families when they discover a suitable and comfortable piece of mobility equipment is immensely rewarding’.

One of Rity’s most meaningful experiences was working with a man who had suffered a stroke, resulting in weakness in his legs and a contraction in one arm. He had been using a basic off-the-shelf wheelchair and relied on caregiver support for outdoor mobility. Living in a hilly area and being tall, his wheelchair was unsuitable for maintaining his posture or navigating the community comfortably. During their trial, Rity introduced a power wheelchair with customised seating. She found seeing his satisfaction and sense of hope light up his face as he was able to independently move around truly heartwarming.

In her free time, Rity enjoys climbing and running, activities that challenge her both mentally and physically, offering a sense of freedom and focus. She also loves cooking, trying new recipes, and sharing meals with friends.
