Going the Distance: Why Power Wheelchairs Inner Workings Make a Difference + Standing Wheelchairs: From Evidence to Trial
Join us for a full day of interactive power wheelchair learning. The days session is not your common power wheelchair education. In this session the Permobil Clinical Services Team will break down the inner workings of power wheelchairs, uncovering the key components under a shroud and how the impact users functionally. Ensuring that you don’t over or under prescribe equipment can be difficult at times. Appropriate prescription of power wheelchairs can often be complex, especially as many of the key features can be hidden under the shroud or within the electronics. In this session we will uncover what is actually under the shroud of a power wheelchair and how these features impact users in a functional way. We will break down and discuss suspension, motors, electronics, actuators and programming in detail.
After breaking down the inner workings of a power wheelchair, the team will dive into standing power wheelchairs. This session is designed to increase your confidence and knowledge on all things standing power wheelchairs and the prescription process. Standing as a therapy intervention has been broadly recognised as an effective method providing clinical outcomes and improvement of functions. Power standing wheelchairs offer great means for extending these outcomes to the home and community situation, adding additional functional and psycho-social benefits. During this session, we will begin with a look at the results from Permobil’s systematic review of the standing literature. Once we understand the evidence, we will discuss how to determine readiness for your client and how to have a successful trial.
Paediatric AT Prescription: Clinical Reasoning in Action
Prescribing assistive technology (AT) for children is both rewarding and complex. Unlike adults, children are constantly growing, developing and changing – which means the equipment we prescribe needs to adapt with them, their families and their environments. A “shrink it down” approach doesn’t work; thoughtful, problem-solving clinical reasoning is key.
This interactive workshop is designed specifically for occupational therapists and physiotherapists working with children with moderate to complex needs. Using case studies and hands-on learning with equipment, participants will have the opportunity to practically apply these principles to real-world scenarios.
Going the Distance: Why Power Wheelchairs Inner Workings Make a Difference + Standing Wheelchairs: From Evidence to Trial
Do you understand the differences in drive wheel configuration and power seat functions but want to develop your knowledge on how these can be used to increase function? This half day workshop with Permobil will take an in-depth and technical look into the different power seat functions and the functional benefits they can have with reference to relevant evidence based practice. We will explore how they work and what effects they may have on other components of the chair.
During the hands-on section in the 3.5 hour session, we will get into the power wheelchairs to test out the suspension systems and feel the differences when navigating over uneven terrains or turning in tight spaces. Using these chairs will allow you to compare mid and front wheel drive bases and attempt to complete different functional tasks using a combination of power seat functions.

Innovations in Seating: Gel, Air, and Advanced Cushion Design
Join us for a half-day clinical education event exploring the latest in wheelchair seating innovation. Chris from Blake Medical will introduce dry polymer gel, a stable, leak-free, and naturally temperature-regulating material with broad applications across seating, bathing, lift chairs, and vehicles. David Fagan will then present on Star Cushions, Axiom Cushions, and the Kalogon Booster system, highlighting Star’s vertical air cell technology for high-risk clients, the adaptive StarLock cushion, and the Axiom range designed with Science of Seating principles for optimal support and comfort. The session concludes with the Kalogon Booster, which applies AI to automate air-cell pressure management, ensuring consistent support, leak detection, and greater independence.
Introduction to Supported Lying
Join us for a highly interactive session where you’ll get hands-on experience with a wide range of supported lying systems—all set up and ready for trial. This practical event will highlight the key features of each system, allowing you to compare solutions side by side and build confidence in selecting the right equipment for your clients’ needs. You’ll learn how supported lying systems improve sleep quality, influence tone and posture throughout the day, and contribute to achieving meaningful NDIS goals, all while exploring evidence-based research, outcome measures, and real-world success stories.
Adjust & Align: Getting to Grips with Tools
Adjust & Align: Getting to Grips with Tools is a practical workshop, which explores the topics below:
- When/how can a therapist adjust a client’s wheelchair and seating components vs when a supplier should be contacted
- The ways in which a wheelchair/seating system can be modified to meet the client’s needs vs when to consider replacement
- Which tools to use when
- Opportunity to practice making hands-on adjustments using tools.
This session is suitable for therapists of all levels, as well as therapy assistants and students.
