Starlight Car Seat

The Starlight child car seat was developed to accommodate children with special needs.

The Starlight is specially designed for very small children, and includes a double piece back support pad to reduce seat depth. To allow for growth in the child, an XL kit is available to grow the car seat when required as the child grows. The Starlight is suitable for young children from 9kg, and will grow with the child right up to 36kg.

The Starlight is compatible with most vehicles and is designed to be installed in the back seat with the use of the vehicle’s 3-point safety belt. Additional to the vehicle’s seat belt, the Starlight comes with a 5-point padded harness to ensure optimum postural support and comfort.

Features:

Starlight with Swivel base
Slim swivel base
To make transfers even easier, an innovative swivel base with a compact design is available to spin the seat so that the caregiver or parent does not have to strain their back lifting the user over the edge of the car seat. The pivot point on the swivel base is off-centre, so that when it is rotated it simultaneously swivels away from the vehicle seat and towards the vehicle door. This allows for easier transfers as the caregiver does not have to reach as far into the vehicle. The slim design of the swivel base allows for more space and headroom inside the car when transferring the child in and out of the vehicle, and only adds a mere 16mm to the overall height of the car seat.
Starlight in tilted position
20° of tilt
The backrest angle of the Starlight is fixed at 90°, however the car seat also comes with an extended angular adjustment (10°-20°), which can be of great assistance for children with limited head and trunk control.
Starlight with lateral supports
Adjustable lateral supports

An innovative feature of the Starlight is the lateral supports. These are robust aluminium supports which guarantee the child a stable sitting position and are adjustable in position.

Inbuilt adjustment at the rear of the car seat allows for the back support height to be increased for growth.

Understanding car seat standards in Australia

Getting to grips with the regulations regarding child restraint systems in Australia can be difficult. We hope the information below helps in some way, and we recommend a visit to the Mobility and Accessibility for Children in Australia Ltd (MACA) website for more details. MACA is a not-for-profit registered charity dedicated to advancing the rights of children with disabilities and medical conditions to safe and accessible transport, and the information below is generously made available by MACA.

Australian vs international standards

Australian and overseas standards/regulations provide requirements to support the design, safety and use of child restraint systems in motor vehicles. However, these standards/regulations differ, particularly for child restraint systems designed for children with disabilities and medical conditions.

Child restraints sold through shopfronts in Australia (Australian standard car seats) are designed for children without additional needs and comply with the Australian standard, whereas special purpose car seats comply with overseas standards/regulations. This is because, unlike the Australian standard for child restraints, overseas standards and regulations provide safety and performance requirements for special purpose car seats. Overseas standards and regulations provide requirements for special purpose car seats, which means all products available in Australia comply with overseas standards or regulations, such as the ECE R44/04.

Key differences between standards
There are many differences in the requirements of each standard and regulation in Australian and overseas standards. This impacts on how they are installed and used in motor vehicles.

The Australian standard has more dynamic testing requirements, including frontal, side, rear (for some restraints), and inverted for baby restraints to test for occupant ejection. It also tests to a greater force than overseas standards. Side impact protection is a key feature of Australian standard car seats and until recently Australia had the only standard in the world requiring side impact testing. However it has recently been introduced in the European Standard and has been proposed for the US and Canadian standards. This means we are likely to see improved side impact protection features for some special purpose car seats in the future.

US and Canadian child restraints generally have a 6 year life, whereas Australian Standard restraints have about 10 years, due to the mandatory use of UV and thermal stabilisers.

Australian standard car seats use shoulder height markers and approximate age to guide use, similar to the European standard ECE r129. Whereas the European standard ECE r44 only uses occupant weight (up to 36 kg). In contrast, the US and Canadian have no weight requirements, therefore special purpose car seats from these locations permit higher occupant weight.

Tether straps

All Australian standard rearward and forward facing car seats and booster seats that weigh more than 2kg are required to have a top tether. This includes car and booster seats sold by shopfronts designed for children without additional needs.

This is different to overseas standards. For example, the ECE r129 requires the use of ISOFIX attachments only for installation (no option for using the vehicle seatbelt like Australian standard car seats) – in combination with either a foot prop or top tether.

For many families who require a special purpose car seat, the swivel base is important as it makes transferring your child to and from the car seat so much easier and safer. There is often the incorrect perception that you need to use a top tether strap with all car seats in Australia due to the Australian standards, which impacts on the usefulness of the swivel base. This is incorrect, as special purpose car seats with a swivel base do not have to conform to Australian standards at present as they meet overseas standards and regulations.
